Day 40: A little too chill in Chiang Mai

DID: Not much. The rain has really interfered with enjoying Chiang Mai to its fullest. Can’t go to the pool, can’t swing with the monkeys on the zip line tour (tour doesn’t go in the rain), can’t sit in the outdoor cafes, don’t really fancy going to the zoo or hiking in the mountains (mud). Even our original choice for dinner was closed due to flooding.  Walked around the old town in the morning to see temples and to see what else the city has going on. Temples were pretty but didn’t see any other signs of life. Liked how in the moat surrounding the city they’ve installed water fountains. Rhys was pointing at them from the tuk tuk ‘look at that! Look at that one there!’

Afternoon back at the hotel, watching movies and Gavin did some homework.

I went for a leg wax which was a great experience (as great as getting hair ripped out of your legs can be, anyway) until they totally ripped me off (hahaha). First the good part. Three women (3!!) were involved in the process. One to hold the lamp over my legs, direct which wax to use (there were 4 types) and where to put it. One to blow on the wax to cool it to a comfortable temperature before application, and to apply it. A third to put the paper strip on top of the wax and rip it off. What service!

But then they tried to charge an extortionate $75 for the privilege. That is more twice what I pay at home!! Luckily I only had $30 on me so I gave them that and left. So weird because they were also trying to get me to do their spa mani/pedi which was $25 for 2 hours of treatment – so how is it that a 30-minute treatment could cost more than triple that amount? (Coquette Salon on Soi 9, Nimmanhemin Road - one to avoid!)

At dinner Rhys spotted another baby at the restaurant and said ‘Baby! Punch!’ We could not believe that he meant punch so we were asking him ‘pinch? Lunch? What do you mean punch?’ And he just kept repeating ‘Baby Punch! Punch it!’ – finally he threw a fist and said ‘Baby…punch face!’. And now, as I’m writing this I asked Rhys ‘what do you do with a baby’ and he said ‘punch it!’ Where does he come up with these things?

ATE: Another stellar breakfast at the hotel. Greatest hits from the previous days (pancakes, omelet, congee, fruit, bacon, toast). Plus mango rice for dessert!

Lunch at Khun Mor’s Cuisine, near the hotel. Went in because the sign said ‘thai style noodle’ but menu was very similar to dinner last night (northern Thai/Lanna cuisine). In fact not many noodle dishes on the menu at all! Starter of shrimp spring rolls, GnR had cashew chicken, I had spicy ground pork in cabbage leaves, Jason had a Lanna chicken curry over noodles and a papaya salad. Also fancy drinks - Gavin had blue lemonade, Rhys had strawberry lemonade, I had regular lemonade, and Jason had both an iced milk tea and an iced coffee. Not quite up to the standard set by last night’s meal but still a very enjoyable meal.

Dinner at Hong Tauw Inn, near the hotel. Gavin requested ‘brilliant noodles’ for dinner, Jason wanted curry – hotel recommended this place.  Gavin said his pad see ew was good but not quite brilliant (and now he’s saying it was ‘passable’). My coconut/shrimp soup was excellent but maybe not brilliant. Jason had pa’nang curry which he said was ‘very good’ (brilliant in Jason terms). Rhys took down his cashew nut chicken in normal lightening speed time without complaint. Also started with a rice cake (chip-like) thing to dip in  a coconut sauce, yum.

Dessert back at Mango Tango. Couldn’t resist even though I was not at all hungry. Found out they have another location in Bangkok, might have to track it down once we’re there!
